The American Stroke Association says following the six letters in the acronym BE FAST — can help save stroke victims and prevent permanent brain damage.

Murphy, 53, had the "A" for "arm weakness" — he felt numbness in his arm while he was at his son's hockey game, according to a statement from his staff. And they said he acted quickly to get care — that's the "T" for "time."

Being seen by medical professionals as soon as possible — be fast! — gives people the best shot at survival and full recovery.

Trouble talking is another common symptom. Can the person repeat a simple sentence? Is their speech slurred or hard to understand?

If you or someone you are with is experiencing these symptoms, call 911 as soon as you can. Getting care quickly is very important for survival and to minimize long-term effects.

A stroke happens when blood flow to or within the brain is interrupted. It can happen when an artery is blocked or when a blood vessel in the brain bursts.…
