Temperature increases have been reported in dozens of store cooling systems, weeks after a similar attack in France.

Suspected cyberattacks have triggered rising temperatures in grocery store refrigeration systems in a growing number of countries across Europe.

Overnight temperature spikes were recorded at stores in Sweden, Ireland, Belgium, Luxembourg and Estonia, as retailers and authorities on Monday pointed to alleged cyberattacks that underscored the vulnerability of systems that once largely operated mechanically.

The head of Sweden’s national cybersecurity centre, John Billow, confirmed on Monday to the Reuters news agency that the centre is responding to multiple incidents affecting store cooling systems.

“We have in recent weeks … identified that we have quite a lot of exposed operational technology devices in Sweden that we have been clear about the necessity to update or patch,” he said.

The temperature of freezers at several Swedish stores rose suddenly overnight, store operators ICA and Coop said, while Swedish retailer Axfood said freezers at a distribution centre for home delivery of groceries in the Gothenburg area were hacked.

SuperValu, Ireland’s third-largest supermarket chain, said refrigeration systems belonging to a specific model have been affected by a “cyber incident” at 13 of its 223 stores.

Meanwhile, the Belga news agency reported overnight temperature increases at dozens of Ahold Delhaize stores in Belgium and Luxembourg, which were blamed on a cyberattack, quoting refrigeration company Sabcobel’s chief executive Stephan Moelans.

Moelans said the units’ evaporators were switched to defrost mode.

Also in Belgium, five Spar shops had their fridge systems attacked, said a spokesperson for Colruyt Group, which operates the franchise system.

And in Estonia, at least one supermarket chain was affected, technology supplier Kitman Coldtech told public broadcaster ERR.

“This is very fresh, it happened this morning,” Kitman CEO Jann Mutso said, without naming the affected chain.

Ahold Delhaize reported a cybersecurity incident to Dutch police last month.

The cyberattack on refrigeration systems at hundreds of supermarkets in France raised the temperature of fridges and freezers to as high as 50 degrees Celsius (122F), spoiling food and causing fires at several stores.
