GitHub Copilot Review
GitHub Copilot (github.com/features/copilot) is GitHub’s AI pair programmer. It suggests the next line or block as you type, including next edit suggestions, and its chat runs inside VS Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains IDEs, Eclipse and Xcode.
Agent mode can edit multiple files, run commands and call MCP tools. On GitHub you can request Copilot as a pull request reviewer, and it labels comments by severity so blocking issues stand out.
Assign an issue to Copilot and it works in a cloud environment before opening a pull request. The Free plan includes 2,000 completions per month, while paid plans list completions as unlimited.
In-depth review: what GitHub Copilot actually does
Checked 28 Oct 2026GitHub Copilot (github.com/features/copilot) is GitHub's AI coding agent. It suggests code as you type, answers questions about a repository, reviews pull requests and can take on issues in the cloud. It works in editors, on github.com, in the terminal and in a desktop app.
Copilot is sold as a subscription with a monthly AI credit allowance. Paid plans include unlimited code completions, while agents and reviews draw on those credits. The product targets individuals, teams and enterprises that already keep code on GitHub. It covers planning, coding, review and merge inside one platform.
Features worth knowing
Copilot suggests the next line or block as you type, including next edit suggestions. The Free plan includes 2,000 completions per month, and paid plans list completions as unlimited.
Chat runs in VS Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains IDEs, Eclipse and Xcode. Agent mode can edit multiple files, run commands and call MCP tools.
You can request Copilot as a reviewer on GitHub, and it returns comments labeled high, medium or low severity. Reviews usually finish in under 30 seconds.
Assign an issue to Copilot and it works in a cloud environment before opening a pull request. The same agent is reachable from GitHub, the CLI and mobile.
What is GitHub Copilot?
Copilot is built around the places developers already work. In an editor it provides inline suggestions and a chat panel with repository context. Suggestions appear as you type and can be accepted with the Tab key. The chat panel can explain unfamiliar code and propose edits without leaving the editor. On github.com it can summarize pull requests, review code and run assigned tasks.
GitHub describes Copilot as an agent that covers the software lifecycle. A change can start as an issue, be picked up by an agent, return as a pull request and be reviewed before merge. All of that happens inside the same repository and its existing permissions, while repository indexing gives the agent project-specific context.
Can GitHub Copilot review pull requests?
Yes, you can request a review from Copilot by opening a pull request and choosing Copilot next to Reviewers. Copilot reads the diff and the surrounding repository, then leaves comments with suggested changes you can apply. Copilot can also review a single file diff in supported editors.
By default the review is a comment, not an approval, so it does not satisfy a required review. Administrators can enable automatic reviews and allow Copilot to approve. A review comment can also ask the cloud agent to fix the issue. Reviewers can accept one suggestion or commit a group of suggestions together.
How much does GitHub Copilot cost?
Copilot Free costs nothing and includes 2,000 completions per month. Pro costs $10 per month, Pro+ costs $39 and Max costs $100. Business costs $19 per seat, and Enterprise costs $39 per seat. A separate Copilot Student plan is free for verified students.
Paid plans receive GitHub AI Credits, and each interaction draws from that balance. When credits run out, you can wait for the monthly reset or set a budget for extra usage, since credits cost one cent each. Budgets can be set at the user, organization or enterprise level. On Business and Enterprise, admins can block paid overage so usage pauses until the next cycle.
Which models can Copilot use?
Copilot offers models from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, xAI, Microsoft and others. The list includes Claude Sonnet 5.5, GPT-6.1 Sol, Gemini 4 Argon, Grok 4.7 and MAI-Code-1.1-Flash. Availability depends on your plan and organization policies, so check the model picker before relying on a specific option.
An Auto option chooses a model for each request. Higher tiers unlock premium models and priority access when demand is high. Administrators can restrict which models a team may select in their settings. Model choice matters most when a team needs stronger reasoning or faster responses, and each model consumes credits at a different rate.
Limitations to weigh first
- –The Free plan includes 2,000 completions per month and limited chat or agent usage, with no pull request review or cloud agent.
- –Copilot is not available for GitHub Enterprise Server, according to the plans documentation.
- –Agent sessions and reviews consume credits at different rates. Long sessions on frontier models can exhaust an allowance, and extra usage requires a budget.
