What did OpenAI say about ChatGPT's search volume?
OpenAI says ChatGPT now handles search queries equal to about 20% of Google's volume. Adam Fry, OpenAI's consumer product lead for ChatGPT, gave the figure at an OpenAI-hosted dinner in New York on 2 November 2026.
Big Technology's Alex Kantrowitz interviewed Fry on stage. The Verge reported the number the next day, and ShiftDelete also reported it with a detailed account. The reports converge on Fry's remarks that evening.
The definition matters: OpenAI counts one search each time a question sends ChatGPT to the web. A follow-up question that triggers another web search counts again.
Fry put it plainly: "Every time you ask a question and go search the web, that's a search," he said. The behaviour now covers people, places, finance and health questions that need current information.
The company has not published the underlying data. Fry did not say where the Google comparison came from, The Verge reported. Google does not publish a live counter of queries.
The same conversation produced other figures. ChatGPT has 1.2 billion weekly active users, up from 1 billion about 60 days earlier. Users generate 1.5 billion images a week, and 250 million people use voice input each week.
Fry said OpenAI plans to merge ChatGPT's Chat and Work modes as part of an effort to simplify the product. That detail matters because a simpler interface can invite more search-like use.
The claim is notable because OpenAI has spent years arguing that chat is a new interface for the web. Fry said this push began about a year and a half ago.
OpenAI has mostly talked about users rather than queries, but the 20% figure turns the competition into a volume comparison. It also gives advertisers a reason to look at ChatGPT as a search channel.
OpenAI's disclosure strategy is part of the story: it publishes user milestones and advertiser counts, but not query totals. That makes the claim hard to compare with Google's audited financial disclosures.
How big is one-fifth of Google's search volume?
Google gave a useful benchmark in a 2025 blog post. It said it sees "more than 5 trillion searches on Google annually." That works out to roughly 13.7 billion searches a day.
One-fifth of 5 trillion is 1 trillion queries a year. By simple arithmetic, that is about 2.7 billion ChatGPT searches a day. That daily figure is our calculation, not a measurement of ChatGPT.
The two totals are not built the same way. Google's number covers every query on its search surfaces. OpenAI's number covers only ChatGPT questions that trigger a web search.
Google's figure comes from internal data and was published in 2025. Its May 2026 search update said queries reached an all-time high, but it did not include a total.
Statcounter gives a different view. It put Google at 91.05% of worldwide search-engine share in October 2026. Bing had 4.8%, Yahoo 1.18% and DuckDuckGo 0.64%.
Those are traffic shares, not query counts, because Statcounter tracks visits to search engines rather than chatbot questions.
The historical comparison is humbling for challengers. Satya Nadella testified in 2023 that Bing had about 3% of search share. He said the figure followed more than a decade of trying, The Verge noted.
If ChatGPT really handles 20% of Google's query volume, it would be several times larger than Bing on that measure. Kantrowitz asked Fry that exact question. Fry did not answer it directly and returned to user growth.
The distinction is not academic: search market share usually describes the split of queries among engines. OpenAI is comparing its own query count with Google's, without publishing the numerator or a current denominator.
That is why the 20% figure should be read carefully: it is a ratio between two company-defined counts. It is not a share of the search market, and it does not appear in Statcounter's tables.
Why does search volume matter to OpenAI's business?
Search volume matters because queries carry intent. Advertisers pay to appear when someone is comparing products, planning a trip or choosing a service.
OpenAI began testing ads in ChatGPT in the United States in February 2026. The first ads ran for logged-in adult users on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education tiers stayed ad-free.
By 21 October 2026, OpenAI said more than 100,000 advertisers had run campaigns on the platform. Ads were available in 89 countries. OpenAI also announced a US test of visual ads during image generation.
Fry said the ads business reached more than $1 billion in annualized revenue within 200 days. He also said OpenAI passed 50 million subscriptions months ago and the number has grown since.
Google's search business is still far larger. Alphabet's Search & other revenue was $63.35 billion in the third quarter of 2026, up 12% from a year earlier. Total Alphabet revenue rose 25% to $127.58 billion.
The scopes differ. OpenAI's $1 billion is an annual run rate for ads only, while Google's $63.35 billion is quarterly revenue. Even so, the gap is enormous.
Query volume is not revenue. A ChatGPT conversation about code, homework or a personal problem may never become a commercial query. Google's auction has years of advertiser data and far more ad inventory.
Ad load also differs. ChatGPT shows ads to free and low-cost users, while Google fills results pages with multiple ad slots. OpenAI says ads are labelled and kept separate from answers, and that design may limit its inventory.
Alphabet shares fell more than 10% after the quarterly report, CNBC reported, as investors weighed heavy AI spending. The company reported negative free cash flow of $9.07 billion and capital spending of $51.36 billion.
OpenAI's IPO plans raise the stakes, and The Verge reported that a listing could be slated for early next year. Query growth helps the pitch, but public investors will focus on revenue per query.
Can the 20% figure be verified?
The 20% figure cannot be independently verified because OpenAI has not published a data set, a methodology or a quarterly query count.
Google's published benchmark is more than 5 trillion searches a year, shared in 2025. It does not publish a live query counter. A current denominator is therefore missing.
OpenAI's own language has varied. Fry described "search-like queries" to Big Technology. The Verge reported that OpenAI counts queries that result in a web search.
Those definitions could produce different totals. One is broad enough to include questions that feel like search. The other is tied to a technical event: a web lookup.
Multi-turn conversations inflate query counts. A single research task can produce five or ten web searches. If ChatGPT users ask more follow-ups than Google users, its query count rises faster than its user count.
The infrastructure also differs. The Verge reported that OpenAI likely routes a significant part of its searches through Microsoft Bing and its own index. That affects cost, coverage and the meaning of a search.
Independent trackers measure other things. Statcounter counts visits to search engines. Similarweb counts visits to websites and apps. Neither includes chatbot queries in Google's search share.
Similarweb's August 2026 report found that 95% of ChatGPT users also used Google in May 2026. The overlap was unchanged from September 2025. That supports the idea of overlap, not the 20% ratio.
A company can still be right without a public audit, and OpenAI can see its own query logs. But a claim made at a dinner is not the same as a disclosed metric, and readers should treat it accordingly.
Public filings could change that. If OpenAI lists, its prospectus may include search and advertising metrics that have been reviewed by bankers and lawyers. Until then, the 20% figure rests on a single executive's account.
What does ChatGPT's search growth mean for publishers?
Search has long been a referral engine for publishers: a query produces a link, and the link produces a visit. That visit can become an ad or a subscription.
Answer engines break that chain because ChatGPT can summarise several sources in one reply. A user may never click through to the original pages.
The Verge noted that Google is reducing conventional referrals to third-party sites. It is investing in AI Overviews and AI Mode, which answer more questions on the results page.
OpenAI's ads add another layer. Sponsored placements inside a chat can capture commercial intent before a user leaves for a retailer or a publisher.
The effect is uneven, because many news, recipe, review and how-to sites depend on search visits. A coding answer or a maths explanation may be less dependent on referrals.
Google argues that AI search expands the pie. Sundar Pichai said AI investments drove the "highest query growth rate over the last five years," CNBC reported.
Query growth and referral growth are different metrics. A search that ends in an AI answer produces a query without a click. Google can grow queries while sending fewer visits.
The public debate has focused on query volume, not outbound clicks. That makes it hard to judge whether the assistant is replacing search traffic or adding a new layer on top of it.
Google's AI Mode includes source links, but it leads with a generated response that can satisfy a query without a visit. Publishers see the query in Google's totals but not the click in their analytics.
Publishers will watch referral data, licensing deals and crawler rules. The 20% claim shows where queries may be moving. It does not prove where traffic has already gone.
Is ChatGPT replacing Google?
The current data points to addition, not replacement. Similarweb found that 95% of ChatGPT users also used Google in May 2026, unchanged since September 2025.
Generative AI platforms drew 9.5 billion visits a month in May 2026, up 70% year over year, Similarweb estimated. Growth is real, but it is not the same as abandonment.
Google's search business is still expanding: AI Mode passed 1 billion monthly users by May 2026. Google said AI Mode queries more than doubled every quarter.
Google also said its Gemini app reached 1 billion users, CNBC reported. Search & other revenue rose 12% in the third quarter. A company losing queries at scale would struggle to post those numbers.
ChatGPT's growth is real too. It added 200 million weekly users in two months. Voice input reaches 250 million weekly users, and OpenAI is pushing personal agents and a simpler interface.
The products are converging. Google is adding search agents and a conversational search box. OpenAI is adding ads, personal agents and richer answers. Both want the same commercial questions.
Fry described OpenAI's "Intelligent UI" idea as a canvas. "That's where the future of this technology goes. You're talking to a canvas," he told reporters, according to The Verge.
Voice and agents could expand the pie further. A spoken question or a background agent may trigger searches that would never have been typed into Google. That supports OpenAI's addition argument, not its substitution argument.
The likely near-term outcome is coexistence, with Google still dominating search traffic at 91.05% in Statcounter's October 2026 data. ChatGPT is becoming a second place to ask.
A 20% query ratio would be a milestone. It would not mean Google has been replaced. Search share, ad revenue and habit all move more slowly than user counts.
What should we watch next?
OpenAI's IPO is the first checkpoint. The Verge reported that a listing could come as early as next year. A prospectus would force more disclosure about users, revenue and costs.
Watch the ads business, where OpenAI is expanding into more countries and testing visual formats. If it raises ad load or opens ads to more plans, revenue per query could rise.
Watch the product merger, which Fry said will combine Chat and Work. A simpler interface could increase search-like usage and make the 20% ratio easier to grow.
Watch voice, where 250 million weekly users represent a large base. Voice queries are harder to monetise with links and display ads, so the ad model may need to change.
Watch Google's response. AI Mode, Gemini 3.5 Flash and search agents are Google's attempt to keep queries inside its own AI. Its fourth-quarter results will show whether search growth holds.
Watch the cost side. Alphabet spent $51.36 billion on capital projects in the third quarter and expects a significant increase in 2027. OpenAI faces its own compute bill for search, ads and agents.
Watch the advertiser mix. OpenAI says more than 100,000 advertisers have used ChatGPT Ads. The next test is whether large brand budgets follow, or whether the platform remains a test channel for direct-response campaigns.
Watch independent measurement: if Statcounter or Similarweb begin publishing chatbot query estimates, the 20% claim can be tested.
The metric that matters most is not users but commercial queries and revenue per query. Those numbers will decide whether ChatGPT's search growth becomes a real challenge to Google's ad business.
For now, the safe conclusion is narrow: OpenAI says it has reached one-fifth of Google's search volume. The claim is plausible, unverified and not the same as winning search.
